Life coaching on Zoom

Life Coaching on Zoom

So, I decided to embark on a little bit of a journey using Zoom for life coaching.

I’ve always wondered whether it’s possible to transmit to a client over the internet, whether it’s through blogs or emails or using Zoom, so I thought I’d give it a go.

And, quite frankly, I was very surprised at how effective Zoom is for life coaching. For some reason, I was under the impression that speaking to a screen through a tiny little camera mounted on top of a monitor would somehow take away from the experience of really good life coaching. I’ve actually been completely blown away by how untrue that is. And in fact, I’ve started to prefer using Zoom. Partly because I’m getting better results from some clients, and partly because it’s easier to manage my time and my clients time.

My use of zoom

When communicating though the internet, there’s a very slight disconnect in the ‘socials norms’. People allow themselves to be more vulnerable and open when they’re sat comfortably in their own familiar surroundings. It’s somewhere private, with their coach on a screen opposite. It allows people to drop social conventions that dictate how we should act (one of the initial barriers to overcome in embodied life coaching). People are much more likely to dig deep from the offset and seldom squirm when I ask them to jump up and experience something in their body, such as personifying their inner champion.

Where do I prefer to coach now?

We’re moving into Summer 2024 right now. I have clients on zoom, I have clients who like to come to my office and talk face to face, and I have clients who like to go on a walk in the woods. I’m surprised to say that my preference is leaning towards zoom. It surprises me because before I began life coaching, I hadn’t really experienced zoom. Now that I’ve been through the learning curve, I understand the best way to life coach on zoom.

Would Zoom work for me?

Those of you looking for a life coach and wondering:

  • How much time does it take out my day?
  • Where do I need to go?
  • Am I going to be comfortable sat in a room with this person?

My advice there would be try it on zoom first. It’s easy, comfortable and gives you a hassle free way to get to know your coach. Most coaches offer free discovery calls, sometimes a phone call, although I far prefer a zoom call. The reasons why are outlined in my post – What is a Discovery call?

Would zoom work for me?

I have clients where we use zoom predominantly, and every now then they want to meet in person, and that’s lovely! We get to check-in in a very different way that hugely helps building the coaching relationship.

For those of you out there who are coaches, not using zoom – I do recommend giving life coaching on zoom a go. Coaching on zoom has a different power to it, but one that is definitely worthy of exploration.
