What is a discovery call?
Discovery calls mean lots of different things for lots of different people but in summary you can say ‘they’re a way of discovering something’ but that’s pretty obvious. I’d like to offer you my take on a discovery call and also, what I’ve seen (and disagree with) Discovery Calls described as. But before that:
What a discovery call is not (for me)
There is a type of discovery call which I don’t like because, it’s actually a sales call, it’s where the coach will phone (not zoom or face to face, and essentially ask a few powerful questions, get to know their client, build resonance around what’s bad in your life and then ask you something like:
What is the cost of not signing up to coaching with me?
Hey, it’s a great question and it hit’s it home for a lot of people, but essentially the purpose of the call is to get that client into a slightly pessimistic frame of mind to crudely highlight the importance of handing your money over right now!
The reason I don’t like it is because it’s a little bit contrived and manufactured. Yeah, we need to get paid, but lets work with people where there is a genuinely meaningful resonance. They’ll be the clients that thrive and (hopefully) pass great referrals over.
What is my discovery call?
Firstly, and quickly, it will be face to face or on zoom! Zoom is actually a very good medium for life coaching [Zoom for coaching]. I also do life coaching near me in Newhaven, either at my office or meeting for a walk in nature.
In our discovery call, I want to genuinely discover things about you. I want you to finish the session with a new and enlightened understanding about yourself.
I also want you to discover things about me, such as how I work, how I will challenge you, how I’ll call you out on those ‘stories’ you keep telling yourself.
Finally, assuming everything is going swimmingly, we’ll talk logistics and costs.
What will you get from me?
First and foremost, you get to decide if I’m the right coach for you. I’ve got so many coaching ‘tools’ that I use here, and which ones I get out of the bag depends on what you’re bringing to the table.
The right tool for the job, right?
Some coaching tools
We might start by looking at your vision for the future. How many of us have a dream or a vision but it’s a little foggy? So we spend the time clarifying it, qualifying what you want your life to look like, feeling what it’s like to be in the vision. This lift’s the fog and we can start creating basic plans straight away, and the calls free!
From there, we probably look at what is holding you back, what obstacles you have, external and internal (we call this the saboteur). Who are your saboteurs? We can dig them out, name them and look at them through a microscope to see how they’re sabotaging your life. How can we recognize them before they start playing havoc with your vision?
For business coaching, we’ll look in detail at your business, your team, perhaps run a SWOT analysis, but a fun one!
We may even have a look at your Meaning Of Life. Yes, we go that deep in a free discovery call. We make a life purpose statement and decide how aligned you are with this statement.
What do I get out of it?
Honestly, I’m deciding if we can work well together. Not in a rude way, but seeing if we have resonance together and if not, I’ll recommend other coaches that would get more out of you.
I want to educate you on the process and language of life coaching so that we can dive straight in when you have a paid session. A big part of this is establishing how our coaching relationship is going to work. Such as:
- Discovering how I’ll get you unstuck if you’re struggling
- What we will do if you want to change direction
- How you’re going to manage your homework
- What our boundaries will be
- How I’ll call you back, if needed
Finally – Logistics – Yes, the boring stuff. It’s important to discuss cancellations, scheduling, payment options, confidentiality, NDA’s, data protection. You get the picture.
What’s so important about Discovery calls?
- It’s helps you decide if I am the best coach for you.
- It allows me to ‘train’ you as a client, so you know what to expect when we dive head first into the deep end (of a lovely warm swimming pool at the local spa).
- It starts our open dialogue and get’s you thinking about your life in a new way.
- We build resonance in our relationship
- We get the boring stuff out the way, when you don’t have to pay for the pleasure of it.
